COLORADO SPRINGS – Children’s Hospital of Colorado in Colorado Springs is growing faster than it planned.
This was the message of Margaret Sabin, Regional President of the Southern Region of Children’s Hospital of Colorado, Feb. 20 at Jack Quinn’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Colorado Springs. We met Sabin and connected with others from Children’s Hospital of Colorado that day as a part of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce & EDC’s Chamber Connect luncheon where Sabin gave a presentation on the growth of the hospital’s regional efforts.
Southern Region of Children’s Hospital has four locations in Colorado Springs, and one in Pueblo, including the new Children’s Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs located at 4090 Briargate Parkway as well as its Outpatient Care at Briargate, 4125 Briargate Parkway.
A 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization, Children’s Hospital Colorado sees 75% of its admissions in the neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Pediatric ICU. 25% of admissions are routine non-high intensity care patients, Sabin said, while other hospitals are 25% ICU and 75% routine.
The new hospital on Briargate opened about seven months ago with 99 beds and it was recently licensed for additional beds and building shell space for 16 more this summer. Children’s Hospital Colorado, Southern Region, will also be opening an Urgent Care facility near America the Beautiful Park in Colorado Springs, Sabin said, so families on the south end of the city will have other options for emergency child health care. In addition, a new Therapies clinic with looking to open a new location and Children’s is opening up two new operating rooms.
A big focus of Sabin’s presentation was the community partnerships the Southern Region of the hospital has built and their effect they’ve had developing the facility in the region as was as the health of child health care overall.
“We want to have the healthiest children in the world in Colorado,” Sabin said. “We love our partnerships. We love engaging locally.”
We spoke to personnel on hand from the Southern Region of Children’s Hospital Colorado to see how some of the staff here at Triple C Restoration and Hurri-Dry Nationwide can volunteer with the hospital to help aid children admitted to overnight stay. I personally have had a lot of experience with Children’s Hospital Colorado from their care of my son, who is now seven years old.
Almost three years ago, he was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney disease and was barreling towards needing a transplant in a year to 18 months at the time. It has been almost three years and with the nephrology team at Children’s, my son’s kidney disease by no means going away (since there is no cure for his condition since it’s so rare); however, his doctors, who have consulted with the nation’s leading authorities on his condition, have managed to keep a watchful eye on his medication and treatment and have staved off the need for a transplant or even dialysis indefinitely.
Wanting to give back, we offered to the persons we connected with at Children’s Hospital Colorado, Southern Region, to schedule regular times our staff can visit its facilities and read to the children requiring overnight stay. We will hopeful hear from the hospital’s volunteer services to begin Triple C Restoration/Hurri-Dry Nationwide’s program with Children’s Hospital Colorado very soon. We are excited to support and connect with such a great and proven facility and organization.
